Hangover Remedies: What Works?
There are so many delicious ways to get inebriated, ranging from a good glass of wine to that dangerous shot you down with your friends at three in the morning at some random bar. Whether you get drunk slowly over a delicious dinner or all at once while being held upside over a keg, the results are the same: pounding headache, queasy stomach, feeling dizzy, disoriented, sick, miserable and desperate for a cure. What can you do? What will help you fight off the pain and misery of being truly hung over? In today's article we take a look at two popular cures, and evaluate how effective they are. Should you engage in them, or look elsewhere?
The first thing almost everybody does upon waking up with a mind blasting headache and awful hang over is to reach out for some pain medication. Whether it's Advil, Ibuprofen, Aleve, or whichever brand you prefer, people immediately pop some pills and try to hang in there for the thirty minutes it takes for the pills to have effect. Is this a good way to go? Absolutely. Nothing will help a pounding headache like some NSAIDs. However, you can perhaps go one better by taking something like Pamprin or Midol, as these pain relievers that are combined with caffeine to help give you a boost and work on your pain from two different angles at once.
For those who are willing and bold there is always the option of exercise. Getting off the couch and causing your heart to beat harder, to break a sweat and push your body can help you feel better as endorphins are released, as your blood gets cycled through your body and your system wakes up and begins to fight to feel better. However, the reality is that very few people when under the attack of a vicious hangover can get up and exercise, and the truth is that this may not even be the best option. Exercise requires that your body be hydrated and nourished, and alcohol can lower the levels of both by slowing your metabolism and dehydrating you. Instead, you might do better by simply resting and allowing your body to heal.
The only true way to undo the damage of a hangover and a night of too much fun is to never have drunk so much in the first place. Remember to hydrate and sleep well, and you will survive the day.
