Depression and You

Have you ever woken up feel blue, down, and simply unable to muster the energy to face the day? If you have, then you know how devastating depression can be, how irrational and debilitating as that which you previously enjoyed loses all pleasure, as you feel unbearably sad and down, heavy and without the will to do any of the things you normal do. Unfortunately depression affects millions of us, with some 12 million women and 6 million men affected each year. Why does depression strike us, and how can we avoid it? What can we do if we feel ourselves going down, and how effective are these remedies? In today's article we take a look at this common affliction, and try to give you some basic advice.

At the heart of it, depression is more likely to strike you if you lack common bonds with family, friends and acquaintances. In previous ages people were much more tightly knit, living in large homes together and spending most of their time with friends and loved ones. Today we are more likely to be separated, living alone and spending our time either at work, before the computer or television. As such, ensuring that we have good bonds with our friends and families is key to staving off depression, as these interactions are what sustain us through the hard times in our lives.

Lack of family and friends however is not the only risk factor out there. You might be liable to become depressed if you have had previous depressive episodes, or if your family has a history of depression. You could be liable to succumb if you have a history of heart problems, a serious chronic illness, martial problems or issues in your family, or simply live in a stressful environment. Work, deaths in the family and job loss can cause depression, as can substance abuse, the use of drugs, or even diseases, recent serious illness or injury. The causes can go even deeper, to childhood trauma or sexual abuse when young, or having an eating disorder or simply prone to worrying.

As you can see the potential causes for depression are wide and varied and in the end the best thing you can do is be gentle and patient with yourself, to reach out to friends and family, and to see a doctor if you feel that your depression is preventing you from living your life as fully as you might wish.
