2 Cheap Ways to Fight Depression

 

When you look out your window or into your newspaper it's easy to understand why so many of us are becoming clinically depressed. The economy is tanking, and unemployment remains incredibly high, so that many of us are having trouble paying our bills and finding work. People are dealing with incredibly high levels of stress in their lives, fighting to stay cheerful and upbeat when so much is seeking to drag them down. This pressure then percolates into their private lives, so that relationships can become tested and heavy, leading to further problems and tension. When so much around us is becoming intense and hard to control, it becomes natural to become depressed, to suffer from low self-esteem and believe that we are alone and isolated with our problems. In today's article we are going to suggest two cheap ways to fight depression that are effective and proven to work.

The first takes effort, but has been clearly documented to have a serious effect on how you feel. While many of us while down in the dumps want nothing more than to simply sit around and do nothing at all, scientific research has demonstrated that exercise can make a huge difference when it comes to our moods and symptoms of depression. One study actually showed that a control group that was told to exercise for 30 minutes each day for 12 weeks actually reduced the severity of their symptoms by 50%, and another study showed that exercise can improve your mood for at  least 12 hours after the exercise itself. What this shows is that when you are feeling down hitting the gym can actually make you feel better and get back on your feet.

Second, a wise thing to do when depressed is to avoid making any serious decisions. Depression can affect your perceptions and judgment, leading you to make choices that you might not ordinarily have made. This can range from impulse shopping for large ticket items to incredibly important decisions about your relationships and career. You should resist the urge for dramatic gestures that you believe will radically improve your life, since often the very radical nature of these decisions betrays how they are poorly thought out and liable to cause you even more grief down the road. If you are still going to make an important decision, run it past friends and family that know you well and check with them if it seems in character.
