Male Depression: More Common Than You Think
When we think of successful and ideal men, we often imagine the same qualities, defined for us by our culture and stereotypes. Hollywood and American society has portrayed the successful man as tough, stoic, almost without sensitivity or feelings, able to handle any problem or source of grief with calm and control. The truth however is that men are not two dimensional stereotypes, and as such are as given to grief, sorrow, depression and insecurity as anybody else. These feelings however are often buried as men seek to match the ideals of society, leading to greater depression and feelings of isolation as they fight to not show what is considered an ‘effeminate' side to friends and loved ones. Thus male depression is more common that you think, given that most men try to hide or deny it. Is your loved one depressed? In today's article we take a close look at two symptoms of depression to help you identify the truth.
Have you ever noticed how some men are prone to erupting into fits of almost irrational rage, yelling at other drivers or becoming incensed over small mistakes in the bill at a restaurant. While many of us are prone to dismissing such eruptions as evidence of their being jerks, often these acts of fury can in fact be symptoms of depression as the men seek to displace their frustration over their feelings into attempts at showing mastery in the world. When a guy begins to sense that something is wrong, that they are constantly sad or upset, they may develop a need to compensate for this sense of helplessness by demonstration hostility and power in the world, leading to their outbursts in public.
While women are more likely to attempt suicide, men are almost four times as likely to die if they actually do try to kill themselves. One reason for this startling statistic is that men will opt for much more lethal methods of suicide, choosing means that are very effective once the decision has been made. For this reason any sign of suicidal tendencies and inclinations should be immediately brought to the attention of friends and family, especially in older men who are at higher risk for suicide. This is a dangerously subtle trend to pick up on, because many men who later committed suicide actually saw their primary care physicians the month before they killed themselves.
