Two Tricks to Feel At Home in the Gym
If you're a regular gym-goer you may not think twice about stepping into your local workout spot and getting to work. You'll probably say hi to a couple of the regulars, and then dive right in, feeling great and energized by the end of your workout. However, some people feel really intimidated by the prospect of going to a gym, of exercising in front of other people, of pushing themselves as hard as they can without being able to look good while doing so. If you're one of those people, then you may even stay away from a gym for fear of being too conspicuous. If that's the case, then this article is for you as we outline a couple of tricks to help you break the ice and realize that anybody and everybody should feel at home in the gym, no matter their fitness level.
The first thing to realize about feeling awkward in a gym is that the feeling is only compounded by the sense of being lost or not knowing what to do. Drifting amongst the machines without really understanding what they're for or what your body needs in order to thrive can make you feel even more embarrassed, and it can be easy to become too overwhelmed by the sheer number of workouts available. So how can you figure out where to start? Easy—just hire one of your gym's local trainers to help orient you for your first couple of workouts. This can not only help you break the ice, but can also get you started right as they compile a workout for you to follow and get you started on the right track.
Second, if you truly do feel conspicuous as you work out, if you absolutely must not have anybody watching you for your own comfort's sake, then take this extra simple tip that will allow you to go the gym even if you dread it: go during off-peak hours. Yesterday I hit the gym at 3pm, and I was the only guy there. A quality gym will be open usually from very early in the day to late in the evening, allowing you the maximum flexibility in when to attend, so you should be able to find a time when you can go that it's relatively empty. Try to avoid the 6pm and 7am time slots however, as those will often be the busiest.
