Wheelchair Access Ramps

Due to the fact that it is hard to use a wheelchair in a home or vehicle that is not wheelchair accessible, building or placing various wheelchair access ramps is extremely important.  Access ramps are not the only home products that are designed to make things  easier for physically challenged people.  For example, there are wheelchair lifts that make it easy for people to move from one level of the home to another.  There are also fixtures that make it easy for handicapped people to access their showers as well.  This article is going to list and talk about some of the wheelchair access ramps that are available to make things more convenient for everyday living.

Threshold Ramps

Threshold ramps are considered to be the smallest of access ramps.  They are the simplest and easiest was to access doorways or other raised areas such as single steps or platforms. They are available in materials such as steel, aluminium, wood and rubber.  They can be used for both external and internal doorways and are either permanent or portable.

Portable Folding Ramps

Portable folding access ramps are normally small and lightweight in size just like threshold ramps.  They are also an easy way to access areas such as doorways, one or two steps for an outside or inside area.  However, these ramps are foldable and easy to take with you.  This particular kind of wheelchair access ramps are so small that many can be placed in a suitcase.  With this type of access ramp, all homes and buildings are turned into wheelchair accessible establishments, even if they are not set up to be that way.

Modular Access Ramps

Unlike portable access ramps, modular wheelchair access ramps are designed to be set up in one location and used for a very long time.  Simply put, they are not portable are meant to remain in the same location for a while.  However, they can still be dismantled and reassembled if the owner of the home ever has to move to another location.    They can be used with wheelchairs and scooters alike.

Track Ramps

Track ramps, which are also known as channel wheelchair access ramps, are two separate tracks that are not designed to be used with scooters.  However, they can be utilized with both manual and power wheelchairs.  In order to use these access ramps, the tracks have to be positioned parallel to one another and positioned properly in order to account for the width of the wheelchair that is being used.

Fixed Wheelchair Van Ramps

Fixed wheelchair van ramps are actually installed on the van and used exclusively for access in and out of the van.  They can be mounted on either the inside or outside of the van, but obviously, the inside ramps take up more useable space.  Unlike portable wheelchair access ramps, they are a lot more stable because they are actually installed on the van.

As you can see, there are many different wheelchair access ramps to fit every different type of wheelchair user.  They are fixed, portable, small, broad and narrow.  They can be installed on both homes and vehicles as well.
