Three Ways to Prevent the Advent of Bad Posture
When we think about the Victorian age, we imagine those elegant women gliding back and forth in their beautiful dresses, their carriage erect, their shoulders back, chins raised. They would sit with ramrod backs, with absolutely perfect carriage, and even the older ladies demonstrated that same inflexible posture, that same correct carriage that made them seem imposing and elegant well into their last years. Today however too many people let their postures go early, and end up shuffling through life, heads hanging low, their spines rounded so that you could rest a teacup between their shoulder blades. Is this your destiny? Do you have any choice over how you end up looking? Of course you do! In today's article we are going to take a look at three ways you can prevent the onset of bad posture, and look fine and elegant well into your older years.
The first key way to improve posture is to begin to do either yoga or pilates. Both of these disciplines focus on posture and stance, helping you become aware of your body and to connect with it at all times. From breathing and inner awareness to strengthening all the fine and small muscles that are involved with posture, these practices are fantastic for your body. What is especially is good is how they focus on your core muscles, those that are involved with your pelvis and abdomen. Why is this important? These muscles are fundamental to how you hold your body, and will improve your posture more than anything else, as well as having a host of other benefits.
Another key focus is to strengthen the muscles of your spine that are involved with keeping your posture erect and elegant. Women especially need to focus on this, as their muscles weaken after menopause and can lead to stooping. Therefor hitting a gym and doing some physical exercise that targets your back extensors, neck flexors, and back muscles in general are crucial. You should do a variety of different exercises that will allow you to keep a straight back, and should even look into getting a trainer if you are at a loss.
Finally, fight osteoporosis as this is one of the key culprits in giving you bad posture. From drinking plenty of milk and eating yogurt to doing weights, there are a number of ways you can fight osteoporosis and ensure a healthy and supportive skeleton.
