Social Anxiety In Children - Causes, Symptoms and Management

"Anxiety in children is originally nothing other than an expression of the fact they are feeling the loss of the person they love" - Sigmund Freud

The above text is in reality one of the most admired line of Sigmund Freud. Evidently, anxiety disorder is not new that even during the time of Freud there are cases of mild and chronic anxiety. Past trauma is what Freud alleged to be the caused of anxiety.

Nonetheless, through the progression of therapeutic research and technology, experts came up with advance analysis and observation about the disorder.

Freud's presumption about kids anxiety has open many opportunities to study the disorder and to come up with brand new and advanced treatments. With the recurrent study of medical practitioners about the disorder the types and causes of anxiety are expressly identified. Experts also found out that one of the most common types of anxiety is seen among kids and it is classified as Social Anxiety Disorder or SAD.

What is SAD or Social Anxiety Disorder?
Approximately 40% of social phobias appear before the child turns 10 and above 95% starts before the kid reach 20. A kid who is diagnosed with SAD is experiencing deep fear in social situations. This ferocious fear is hindering a kid to enact normal daily activities.

Factors That Causes The Disorder
There are several factors that are said to be causing the disorder. Here are some of them.
Familial TendenciesAccording to examination and studies, anxiety disorders are inherited. A kid is prone when either his mother or dad or equally is distress from an anxiety disorder, although not necessarily SAD or Social Anxiety Disorder.

Social And Environment Causes

Environment factors can pertain to body defacement, mistreatment or cruelty by parents or being brought up by fixated care takers. Social factors can be past trauma that can contribute to the uncommunicative attitude of the kid like experiencing very excruciating situations in school or at play.

Symptoms Of SAD - How To Tell If Your Kid Is Experiencing SAD

Here are some of the most common symptoms of SAD in children. The most demonstrable symptom of this disorder is being very fretful or agitated in the presence of other people. Other symptoms that are observed in  kids with social anxiety are poor eye contact, numbing, weeping, excessive clinging, refusing to attend school, devoting time and energy to computer games, locking his room, spending a lot of time being alone, refusing to participate in class and other activities like deliberations and show and tell.On the other hand, do not think that your child is already suffering from SAD if he is exhibiting these symptoms. Assess the behaviour of your kid further. He just may not be feeling well that is why he is refusing to attend school. You may want to check if he is sick. With that said, it is really crucial to have good and open communication with your kid. So that you know if your kid is indisposed or if he is under too much pressure and stress.

Home Management - What Parents Can Do

Before any interventions, monitor your child's behavior first. Discover the problem. Sit with your kid and talk. Encourage him to speak and to open up. You may want to develop his confidence. Sit with your child and read him a paperback. Ask questions afterwards. Show that you care and that you support him. Do not be condemnatory. It will only bring your son down.

Incontestably, SAD or Social Anxiety Disorder in kids is manageable especially in the former stage. On the other hand, do not hesitate to ask for advise from a general practitioner if you need assistance coming up with a concrete treatment and management plan
