Two Surprising Facts About Brown Sugar
When we think of all things we rarely think first of brown sugar. Instead our minds no doubt stray to refined white sugar, that insidious ingredient of almost every recipe out there, dusting out donuts and percolating in our coffees. Yet did you know that while today there are a number of other sweet substitutes (ranging from the all-natural Stevia to honey to agave), brown sugar has some surprising none-sweetener related benefits? That's right, with a little wisdom and knowledge you can use brown sugar for a variety of other purposes, so that your bowl can be put to surprising ends. In today's article we're going to examine two little-known medicinal properties of brown sugar, and show you when and how you could put this deliciously decadent treat to your body's benefit instead of detriment.
True story: I was dancing at a club one night when an errant waiter chose to walk through the crowd with a tray of empty champagne flutes. Turning mid-dance I accidentally karate-chopped right through the flutes, shattering them and opening a deep cut in my pinky finger. Blood began to pour down my forearm, and the waiters, panicked that I might sue, rushed me into a back room where they lugged out a medicine bag and tried to clean and bandage the wound. It kept bleeding however, no matter what they did, and it looked like I would have to go to hospital for stitches. Then an old guy came up with a huge bag of brown sugar and poured a large amount of it on the cut. I watched, bemused, as my blood used the crystal lattice work of the sugar as an aid for coagulation, and within a minute the blood had ceased to pour forth. Turns out brown sugar also acts as an anti-inflammatory, and has anti-microbial properties too to help with infection. Who knew?
Second, if you want to use it as a beauty treatment, there's nothing simpler. Take some brown sugar, and then blend it in your coffee grinder to gain an even smoother consistency. When it's nice and powdery, mix is with several table spoons' worth of olive oil, and then add a pinch of nutmeg for aroma. Use this natural exfoliator twice per week for up to one or two minutes a time, rubbing it in carefully and scrubbing it in circular motions on your face for beautiful skin!
