Why Long Term Goals Matter

When it comes to setting your sights on health and fitness, everybody needs a motivating factor, a goal to fight toward. When they get low, when they run out of motivation or enthusiasm, they need something to remember, to spur them on, some driving force to keep them in the saddle. Toward that end, people devise goals, but unfortunately most of them reach out for short term goals. Why is this problematic? Why should they reach for long term goals instead? In today's article we're going to look at the difference, and how long term goals can help you achieve success.

The reason long term goals are so much more powerful is that they are not easily accomplished. When you reach your goal, whether it's losing 10 pounds or fitting into a pair of jeans, you are in effect finished. You've reached the end line, and many people at that point become lost, without purpose or driving force. Long term goals will motivate you for years on end, will drive you on and keep you on track when all others have long quit.

So what qualifies as a long term goal? What kind of desire can sustain you for years on end? First of all, it's usually not something small like losing 10 lbs, nothing so clearly defined and definite. Instead, you want to think in term of life goals such as being healthy well into your old age, lowering your blood pressure permanently, or even something indirect such as achieving a job promotion or publishing a novel.

Why do these intangible goals work best? Because you have to decide what your life is really all about, and how you can best accomplish those goals. All of them, bar none, need you to be on top of your game, need you to be alert, sharp, bursting with energy and driven. You need to be healthy and strong, so you begin constructing a chain of connections from your distant goal to your current situation, filling it in with different challenges and goals.

Then, one day, when you want to quit, you have to remember your long term goal. When you are too lazy or tired or hung over to get out of bed, think about your kids, and how you wanted to be healthy when they grow older. If you stay in bed, you're betraying them, and that will keep you going long after you've lost 10 lbs.
