Surprising Headache Triggers

When people are hitting their stride, when everything is falling into place and they feel like the whole world is at their feet they may often be surprised by a sudden headache attack that seems to come out of nowhere. All of a sudden pressure can begin to build in your head, in your temples, above your eyes, and before you know it you're popping some pain medication in order to control a surprise headache attack. Where do these attacks come from, and how might they be triggered? In today's article we are going to look at three surprising triggers that might be ambushing you, and give you some advice on how best to handle them.

The first surprising trigger is a simple yet subtle one: doctors have discovered that going from a fast-paced and challenging routine to a very relaxed holiday can actually trigger headaches as you suddenly begin to sleep more and work less. This imbalance will throw your body for a loop and you may actually get headaches from inactivity, as your body complains about suddenly not being on the go as it is used to. The solution? Ease into your vacation, making sure to try and keep the same sleeping patterns and as active as you were, or at the very least throwing in a good workout each day.

Another surprising source of headaches can come from common household items and activities. Have you just painted your bedroom or kitchen? Put up a fresh layer of paint to freshen up your home? Well, many paints contain what are called volatile organic compounds (VOC) that can cause headaches, especially if the room isn't well ventilated. Another source can be insecticides that are very effective at snuffing out pests but can also cause headaches or nausea if the room isn't subsequently ventilated as well. In both of these cases the solution is to simply ventilate the room and allow the fumes to dissipate.

Finally, another trigger for headaches can be simple dehydration. If you live in a dry environment such as Arizona or Utah you may be sweating more than you know if you spend time outside, and as the hours roll by you may slip into a state of dehydration without realizing. This is especially true if you are working out or being physically active. The solution is simple, and can save you from grinding headaches and feeling hung over: keep track of your water intake, and seek to drink eight glasses a day.
