Here's What a Physician Assistant Does

The number of men and women who search on internet about the health care profession of physician assistant is absolutely staggering. The number is in the millions, and this health care career isn't anything new. It has been around since the 1960s, but still many of us confuse this profession with that of the medical assistant, a nurse, a surgeon and even a doctor. To be short, a physician assistant is very similar to a doctor and to be more to the point a PA is able to help relieve all the stress that comes on doctors.

Physicians take on a lot of patients and they don't always have time to examine all of them, and the walk in patients that come in clinics usually don't even know that they are being examined by a physician assistant. PAs will be handling the easy cases that don't require a lot of collaboration so that doctors can attend to the more immediate and serious patients. This is absolutely great that so many men and women are taking on this profession on account of the fact that it takes less time to become a PA than it is to become a doctor.

Its because of this that a PA has to work under the supervision of a physician as they perform health care services ranging from taking a patients medical history, they will be performing examinations and they will be creating treatment plans for patients, they have the ability to order laboratory tests and x-rays and they are able to interpret the result of these tests, and in some states they are able to write patients prescriptions based on whatever condition they are afflicted with.

Physician assistants are also able to assist in surgeries, they are able to perform during surgeries and they are able to care for patients in post operative care and pre-operative care. There are going to be many circumstances in which a PA can work as the primary health care provider for patients. This is going to happen because of the fact that there is going to be a serious shortage of physicians in the areas that are rural, in the inner cities, and in other areas where there isn't a lot of medical personnel. For PAs to be able to work there without a physician being present, they will have to consult a visiting physician at least once a week but it really depends on the laws of the state.
