Catheter Infections and Ways to Avoid Them

Many a times an individual who has been operated upon or is admitted in a hospital does not want to use a urinary catheter but there are situations when the use of one cannot be avoided at all. This is especially true in case of a patient who has undergone a surgery and therefore may find it difficult to move.  A catheter enables the bladder relief and the patient does not need to move from one place to another.

The use of catheters are however fraught with risk. Patients often develop infections due to improper catheterization. Also the fact that the catheter is inserted into the urethral tissue which is extremely sensitive also causes several problems amongst patients.  It is also known as Catheter – associated Urinary Tract Infection or CAUTI. Though any of the catheters can cause urinary tract infection, an internal catheter is more likely to make one vulnerable as it destroys the natural ability of the human body to destroy the microbes that cause infection.

As for the ways of avoiding CAUTI one needs to follow certain rules. Proper knowledge about CAUTI is very important. If you do not know what exactly CAUTI is then it's difficult for you to associate it with yourself and also maintain those careful steps to avoid the same. Hence asking the doctor about CAUTI is a must.

A CAUTI can end up causing a lot of pain and discomfort.  So, if you are admitted to a hospital do enquire about the different processes used for catheterization so that you can avoid an instance of an UTI.  It is necessary to ensure that all the equipments and the surroundings are absolutely clean. The equipments should be sterilised. Catheters should not be re-used under any circumstances.  You can also reduce the chances of an infection by the use of Foley catheters.  Do ask for immediate assistance, if you notice blood during the insertion of the catheter.

It is necessary to keep all these factors in mind, if you wish to avoid an infection. Follow what your doctor says and ensure that the basics of personal hygiene are taken care of. This will certainly help you to avoid an infection.
